Fire and Riparian Areas
Step Wise Guide
Post Wildfire Planning
Which streams in the burned area have the highest exposure to increased thermal loading because of loss of riparian vegetation?
In a post fire environment, it might be useful to understand where the highest burn severity overlaps with increased exposure to thermal radiation.
OPTION 1:
Step 1: Run the Thermal Load Tool with the appropriate input parameters. View the map display showing the stream segments with the highest sensitivity to removal of riparian vegetation.
Step 2: Load the BARC map. Visually search for overlaps of the highest burn severity with the highest potential for increased thermal loading with the loss of riparian vegetation.
OPTION 2:
Step 1: Run the Thermal Load Tool with the appropriate input parameters.
Step 2:NetMap's Overlap Tool. From the drop down lists, select any portion of the distribution (i.e., top 10% or highest 1%) of thermal loading (reach scale solar radiation difference, vegetated to bare) and BARC values (in reaches). Search for areas where the highest burn severity overlaps with the highest thermal loading potential.
