Along Channel, Reach Scale

Along Channel Thermal Refugia (reach scale)

Tool Description: AndTo learn more about how current shade effects thermal loading, see the Shade-Thermal Energy Tool in NetMap.

NOTE, prior to running this tool, you will need to access and process Vegetation Data, such as LEMMA (see Tool).

Data Type: Line (stream layer)

Field Name: SolShd; Common Name: Current shade thermal energy (to streams).

Units:  Watt-hours/m2

NetMap Module/Tool: Vegetation/Fire/Climate - Vegetation - Stream-Thermal Refugia (Along Channel - Reach Scale)

Model Description: The model predicts thermal energy to stream channels using a combination of bare earth radiation and the effects of current shade conditions on bare earth radiation (See Current Shade-Thermal Energy tool).

Figure 1. The "Along Channel Refugia" tool can use two different thermal loading indicators: 1) Solar radiation - vegetated (SolVeg - see Tool) which uses a single estimate of stream side vegetation using average stand height, stand (buffer) width and vegetation density and 2) current shade-thermal energy (see Tool) using a combination of basal area and tree height. The examples given below use the current shade calculation.

NOTE, prior to running this tool, you will need to access and process Vegetation Data, such as LEMMA (see Tool).
